The Domain of the University of the South is located on the southern Cumberland Plateau in Franklin and Marion Counties Tennessee (Figure 1). This region has a temperate humid climate, typified by long moderately hot summers, short mild winters, and an annual rainfall of approximately 60 inches. Because of the Domain's location on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau, its weather differs somewhat from the surrounding region. Typically the Domain receives more rainfall, is approximately 5 10 degrees cooler, and receives more frozen precipitation compared to neighboring communities located to the west on the Highland Rim, or to the east in the Sequatchie Valley (Foley 1903, Smalley 1982).
